For the dog days of Summer
July, 2008 "How To" of the Month
The "dog days of Summer" is the period between early July and early September when the hot sultry weather of summer usually occurs in the northern hemisphere. Those days can leave you irritable, short tempered, limp and generally feeling drained. This month's How-to will help you combat that hot, sticky feeling, and instantly cool your over-heated body.
Here are several recipes for refreshing sprays that can quickly change your whole attitude. Use as needed!
NOTE: Use only essential oils, never fragrance oils.
Body Refreshers
For "super cooling", use the spray while resting directly under a ceiling fan.
Body Spray 1 cup vodka Peel from 1 lemon, organic if possible (no pesticide residue) 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, shredded (any variety of mint EXCEPT pennyroyal)
1. Place all ingredients in a lidded jar and shake well. Allow to steep for at least 3 days, shaking daily, then strain. Discard lemon peel and mint leaves. You want no little pieces of leaves floating around. 2. Place cologne in a spray bottle and use whenever you need a refreshing spritz.
Basic Body Spray/Splash Recipe 2 ounces distilled water 20 drops essential oil of choice (cooling oils include eucalyptus, peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm or lavender*) 1. Find a glass bottle with a misting pump spray top (you can find old perfume bottles at garage sales or thrift shops–just be sure to wash them out very well–or you can buy new bottles.) 2. Add the oil drop by drop to the water. Shake before every use. May be stored in the fridge for extra cooling! Spearmint does not contain menthol like other mint varieties. Mint is cooling, refreshing and cleansing to the skin.
*eucalyptus, peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm and lavender are all antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic.
Fragrance combination suggestions
